On 6th May 2023, King Charles III was crowned at Westminster Abbey in the first British coronation in 70 years. The Royal Mint marked this once-in-a-generation event with a special proof sovereign featuring something that appears on no other coin in the Carolean era: a crowned portrait of King Charles III.

This is the only UK sovereign to show the King wearing the crown. Before and after this issue, all Charles III sovereigns carry the standard uncrowned Martin Jennings effigy. The 2023 Coronation Sovereign stands uniquely apart.

The Crowned Portrait — Unique in the Series

Martin Jennings' coronation portrait depicts King Charles III wearing the crown — a departure from his standard uncrowned effigy used on all other sovereign issues. This crowned portrait was designed exclusively for the Coronation series and does not appear on any other Royal Mint sovereign before or after. It is a one-time-only obverse type and a mandatory acquisition for any collector building a Carolean sovereign type set.

One-Year-Only Reverse Design

The reverse features a special Royal Arms design created exclusively for the Coronation sovereign series — distinct from both the standard Pistrucci St George and the 2022 Memorial Royal Arms. Together with the crowned obverse, this creates a coin that is visually unique in both its obverse and reverse. It will not be reproduced.

NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo

Certified by NGC as PF70 Ultra Cameo — numerically perfect, with no imperfections visible under 5x magnification. The Ultra Cameo finish provides maximum contrast between the frosted crowned portrait and the mirror-polished fields.

Investment & Tax Status

British gold sovereigns are CGT exempt as legal tender and carry no VAT. As the first coronation sovereign in 70 years — and the only one to carry a crowned King Charles III portrait — this coin holds a historical distinction that cannot be replicated.
