Sell Gold Proof Sets
Sell Gold Proof Sets — Royal Mint Specialist Buyers | UK
Gold proof sets from The Royal Mint are among the most misvalued items in the second-hand precious metals market. Time and again, people who have spent years carefully accumulating these sets are offered little more than their gold weight by buyers who do not understand — or do not care about — their collector value.
Sovara Coins is a specialist UK dealer in Royal Mint gold proof coins and sets. When you sell to us, we value what you have correctly: as the collector items they are.
What Is a Gold Proof Set?
A gold proof set is a collection of proof-struck gold coins issued by The Royal Mint for collectors, not circulation. They are produced using specially polished dies and blanks, struck multiple times to achieve extraordinary detail and the characteristic mirror-field, frosted-device appearance. They are issued in limited numbers in presentation cases with numbered Certificates of Authenticity.
The most common gold proof sets in UK private collections are proof sovereign sets — typically containing the full sovereign, half sovereign, double sovereign and five sovereign piece. But the Royal Mint has issued proof gold sets across many other series: Britannia sets, commemorative gold issues, Great Engravers proof sets, and historic re-issues.
Gold Proof Sets We Buy
Annual proof sovereign sets — issued most years since 1980, in two, three, four and five-coin configurations. Value varies significantly by year, with jubilee years and special reverse years commanding higher premiums.
Proof Britannia sets — Royal Mint gold Britannia proof sets in one ounce, half ounce, quarter ounce and tenth ounce. We buy complete sets and individual coins.
Great Engravers proof sets — the Royal Mint's most prestigious modern series, including Una and the Lion, The Three Graces and Gothic Crown issues. These are among the most actively sought modern proof sets in the market.
Jubilee and commemorative proof sets — coronation issues, jubilee sets, and other limited commemorative gold proof collections command significant premiums when complete with original presentation.
Graded proof sets — sets where individual coins have been graded by NGC or PCGS, particularly at PF69 or PF70, are valued at a premium over ungraded examples.
Historic proof sets — Victorian and Edwardian proof sets, coronation issues and pre-decimal proof collections. We assess these individually.
Why Proof Sets Are Not Bullion
The single most important thing to understand before selling a gold proof set is that its value is not determined by its gold weight alone. Here is why:
A 1989 four-coin proof sovereign set contains approximately 44 grams of 22-carat gold. At a gold price of £80 per gram, that is roughly £3,500 in gold content. But a complete, boxed 1989 set in excellent condition — particularly if it includes the 500th Anniversary reverse sovereign — sells for considerably more in the collector market. The collector premium reflects the limited mintage, the historical significance, the condition of the presentation, and demand from collectors who want that specific year.
A general gold buyer will offer you the gold weight. A specialist will offer you the collector value. The difference can be substantial.
Factors That Affect Gold Proof Set Value
Year and design — special reverse years, jubilee issues and commemorative sets consistently outperform standard annual issues.
Completeness — all coins present, in original capsules or holders, in the presentation case with the Certificate of Authenticity.
Box condition — the original presentation case should be undamaged. A worn or missing box reduces but does not eliminate the collector premium.
Certificate — the numbered Certificate of Authenticity should be present and uncut. The certificate number ties the set to its issue record.
Coin condition — proof coins should show no handling marks, milk spots or cleaning. Coins that have been removed from their capsules and replaced typically show evidence of this under magnification.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my proof set is valuable?
Contact us with photographs. We will identify the set, explain what it is worth and why. There is no obligation and no charge for the valuation.
My set has some milk spotting on the coins — is it still worth selling?
Yes. Milk spotting is common on proof coins, particularly from the 1980s and 1990s. It reduces the premium but does not eliminate collector value entirely. We make fair offers based on actual condition.
Should I remove the coins from their capsules to photograph them?
No. Always photograph coins in their original capsules or holders. Removing them risks handling marks and permanently reduces value.
What if my proof set is missing the certificate?
A missing certificate reduces value. Advise us at the outset and we will factor it into our valuation honestly.
Do you buy proof sets outside the Royal Mint?
Our primary focus is Royal Mint gold proof issues. We will also assess proof gold from other reputable mints — contact us with details.
