Sell Sovereign Sets
Sell Your Sovereign Set — UK Specialist Buyers of Proof & Collector Sovereign Collections
If you have a sovereign set to sell, the most important thing to understand before approaching any buyer is this: a complete sovereign set is worth more than the sum of its parts. A matched set in its original presentation case, with all certificates intact, commands a collector premium that individual coins sold separately will never achieve. The right buyer understands this. A general gold buyer does not.
Sovara Coins is a UK specialist in proof sovereign sets and graded sovereigns. We actively buy sovereign sets of all types — and we value them as collector items, not bullion.
Sovereign Sets We Buy
Annual proof sovereign sets — The Royal Mint has issued annual proof sets since 1980, typically comprising the full sovereign, half sovereign, double sovereign and five sovereign in a presentation case with Certificate of Authenticity. These are bought and sold as complete sets. Completeness, original box quality, and the specific year all affect value significantly.
Jubilee and commemorative sets — Years with special reverses or royal occasions produce sets with higher collector demand: the 1989 500th Anniversary set, the 2002 Golden Jubilee, the 2012 Diamond Jubilee, the 2022 Platinum Jubilee, and the 2022 Memorial and 2023 Coronation sets are all actively sought by collectors. These command premiums well above standard annual sets of the same size.
Two-coin and three-coin sets — Not all sets are four-coin. Many years saw two or three-denomination presentations. We buy these complete sets at appropriate collector values.
Historic sovereign sets — Pre-modern sovereign sets, including Victorian and Edwardian matched sets in original fitted cases, are among the rarest and most valuable. We assess these individually based on completeness, case condition, and market demand.
Graded sovereign sets — Sets where some or all coins have been individually graded by NGC or PCGS command a premium over raw sets. A complete annual set where each coin is PF70 graded is a genuinely scarce and desirable assemblage.
What Determines the Value of a Sovereign Set
Several factors affect what a sovereign set is worth beyond its gold content:
Completeness — Is every coin present? A four-coin set missing the five sovereign is worth less than a complete set, and usually less than the remaining three coins would suggest, because it cannot be presented as a complete set to the next buyer.
Original presentation — Is the original Royal Mint box present and undamaged? Is the Certificate of Authenticity included and is the certificate number uncut? Box and certificate condition has a direct impact on collector value.
The specific year — Not all years are equal. Key dates with special reverse designs, low mintages, or royal significance achieve higher prices. Standard annual sets from years of normal production sell at more modest premiums.
Coin condition — Proof coins should be in their original protective capsules or holders, without handling marks or milk spotting. A set opened, handled, and then replaced in the box will typically achieve less than one that has never been removed.
How to Get the Best Price for Your Sovereign Set
Before contacting any buyer, do the following to maximise your return:
- Keep the set complete — do not remove individual coins or sell them separately before getting a full-set valuation
- Do not clean the coins — cleaning always reduces numismatic value, even if it appears to improve appearance
- Locate the original box and certificate — even a worn box adds value
- Photograph everything — box open and closed, each coin, the certificate
- Contact a specialist, not a general gold buyer, for the initial valuation

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is my sovereign set worth?
This depends on the year, completeness, condition and whether any coins are graded. Contact us with photographs for a same-day assessment. As a guide, modern annual proof sets in original presentation typically sell for a meaningful premium above their gold weight — jubilee and commemorative sets considerably more so.
Can you buy a set with a damaged box?
Yes. A damaged box reduces but does not eliminate the collector premium. We will make a fair offer based on what you have.
Is the Certificate of Authenticity important?
Yes, significantly so. Buyers of complete sets want the full original presentation. A missing certificate reduces value. If the certificate is cut or incomplete, advise us at the point of enquiry.
Should I get the coins graded before selling?
In most cases, no — grading takes time and costs money, and the uplift is not guaranteed. Contact us first for a valuation on the raw set. If grading would materially improve the return, we will tell you honestly.
