About this coin
2023 Coronation of King Charles III 2oz Gold Matte Proof Coin – Mint Error, Reverse Struck Through – NGC PF69 Matte
This is a 2023 Coronation 2oz Gold Matte Proof with a genuine mint error. NGC has certified it MINT ERROR PF 69 MATTE with the attribution "Reverse Struck Thru". A black synthetic fibre was caught between the die and the gold blank during the strike and is still embedded in the upper rim of the reverse next to the letter T of "THE". It has left an incuse impression and a flattened area where the object interrupted the strike. The rest of the coin is as issued.
To our knowledge this is the only mint error known on the 2023 Coronation 2oz gold coin. We have not found another reported example. A retained struck-through of this kind is rarely seen on any modern gold coin. Read the full story in our article on the retained strike-through error.
It is two rarities in one coin. The matte proof 2oz Coronation is a very small issue with a reported mintage of 97 against 306 for the standard mirror-finish proof. On top of that each struck-through error is unique to the coin that carries it.
The matte proof finish gives a soft satin surface that shows relief and detail rather than mirrored contrast. The reverse carries John Bergdahl's Royal Arms design with the inscription THE CORONATION OF KING CHARLES III 6 MAY 2023. The obverse carries Martin Jennings' first crowned coinage portrait of King Charles III.
Why PF69 Is the Top Grade for a Coin Like This
A grade of 70 is practically unobtainable on a coin with a genuine struck-through error. NGC's own guidance on struck-throughs says that large examples can be attributed as Mint Errors but are not eligible for a grade of 70. NGC grades the coin on its remaining surfaces and records the error on the label. PF69 Matte is the second-highest grade NGC awards and effectively the ceiling for a coin like this.
We did not request conservation before grading. The process could have removed the fibre embedded in the rim. The fibre is what makes this coin unique so it was left untouched. The coin was graded in October 2026 and is supplied sealed in a tamper-evident NGC holder exactly as it was graded.

Why This Coin Stands Out
The Coronation 2oz matte proof is one of the smallest gold issues of the reign and errors on gold proof-quality coins are seldom seen. This example combines the two with an attribution from NGC and an untouched retained fibre. It suits collectors of the Coronation range and anyone who collects mint errors in gold.
As UK legal tender gold this coin is exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents and free from VAT under current investment gold rules. Browse our full range of graded gold Sovereigns to explore more rare and certified coins.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is this coin graded PF69 and not PF70?
A grade of 70 is practically unobtainable on a coin with a genuine struck-through error. NGC's guidance says large struck-throughs can be attributed as Mint Errors but are not eligible for a grade of 70. PF69 Matte with a Mint Error attribution is effectively the top outcome for a coin like this.
Has the coin been conserved?
No. We did not request conservation before grading because it could have removed the fibre embedded in the rim. The coin is exactly as NGC graded it.
Is this the only known mint error of this coin?
To our knowledge yes. We have not found another reported example of a mint error on the 2023 Coronation 2oz gold coin.
