This 2014 Gold Proof Sovereign is a striking example of a modern minting error known as the Unfrosted Obverse Die variety. Instead of the usual frosted portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, this coin displays a fully polished proof finish across both the portrait and the fields, creating a dramatic, mirror-like appearance.

The Unfrosted Obverse Die error on the 2014 Gold Proof Sovereign occurred when the Royal Mint’s obverse die missed the specialist frosting process during preparation. Normally, the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II is treated with a laser or acid-etched frosting to create a frosted finish that contrasts with the mirror-like fields. In this rare case, the obverse die was left fully polished, resulting in the portrait and surrounding fields both displaying a reflective proof surface. This was a production oversight that escaped quality control, making surviving examples extremely scarce.

Graded PF69 Ultra Cameo by NGC, this example is just a single point from perfection. Only a handful of these error strikes are known, making it one of the rarest sovereign varieties in recent history.

The coin features Benedetto Pistrucci’s classic St George and the dragon reverse and is struck in 22 carat gold to the Royal Mint’s world-class proof standard.
