About this coin
1992 Gold Proof Quintuple Sovereign – Mint Error, Reverse Struck Through – NGC PF69 Ultra Cameo
This 1992 Quintuple Sovereign, also known as the Five Sovereign, is the largest coin in The Royal Mint's Sovereign family, and this example carries something most never will: a genuine mint error. NGC has certified it with a Mint Error designation and the attribution "Reverse Struck Thru", meaning a foreign object came between the die and the gold blank at the moment of striking. The coin was struck through it, leaving an impression on the reverse.
NGC does not deduct points for a struck-through itself. The coin is graded on its remaining surfaces and carries the error designation on its label, which is why an error coin can still reach an excellent grade. This one is certified NGC PF69 Ultra Cameo, with deep mirrored fields and strong frosted contrast on the rest of the coin. Gold proofs are checked by the Mint's quality control, which is part of why errors on them are so seldom seen.
The reverse carries Benedetto Pistrucci's Saint George and the Dragon, first used on the modern Sovereign in 1817. The obverse carries Raphael Maklouf's third definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, showing her wearing the George IV State Diadem, with the designer's initials on the truncation. It was in use on UK coinage from 1985 to 1997.

Why This Coin Stands Out
Proof Quintuple Sovereigns of the 1990s were issued in small numbers, and genuine mint errors on gold proofs are seldom seen. This piece combines both, with an independently attributed error, a near-perfect grade on the remaining surfaces and the classic Pistrucci design. It suits collectors of the Maklouf-era Five Sovereign series and anyone building a collection of error coins in gold.
As UK legal tender gold, this coin is exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents and free from VAT under current investment gold rules. Browse our full range of graded gold Sovereigns to explore more rare and unusual certified coins.
