The 1989 Gold Proof Five Sovereign Piece is one of the most iconic and historically significant modern proof sovereigns ever issued by The Royal Mint. Released to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the very first gold sovereign of 1489, this unique design broke from tradition with both a new obverse and reverse.

Designed by Bernard Sindall, the obverse features Queen Elizabeth II seated facing forward on the throne, a modern interpretation of the original Tudor sovereign of King Henry VII. The reverse displays a magnificent shield of the Royal Arms over a Tudor rose, framed by a beaded border - a bold departure from the classic St George and the Dragon.

This impressive coin, struck in 22-carat gold and weighing nearly 40 grams, represents the Five Sovereign (£5) piece, the largest denomination in the sovereign series. Graded by NGC as PF69 Ultra Cameo, it exhibits superb strike quality with near-flawless surfaces and strong contrast between the frosted devices and mirrored fields.

Widely considered the most recognisable modern proof sovereign design, the 1989 issue remains a cornerstone for collectors - and the Five Sovereign piece is its most prestigious form.
