2005 Gold Proof Five Sovereign – Timothy Noad Design – NGC PF69 Ultra Cameo
The 2005 Five Sovereign — also known as the Quintuple Sovereign or Five Pound Sovereign — carries a one-year-only reverse design commissioned from heraldic artist Timothy Noad. Rather than replacing the traditional subject entirely, Noad reworked Benedetto Pistrucci's classic Saint George and the Dragon into a more dynamic composition: George is shown locked in combat with the dragon, shield raised, in a design that fills more of the coin's surface than Pistrucci's original. It marked a deliberate departure from the design used continuously since 1817, and proved a popular, quickly sold-out issue at the time.
The obverse carries Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, with his "IRB" initials below the effigy — the portrait used on British coinage between 1998 and 2015.
Graded NGC PF69 Ultra Cameo, this coin sits just below the technical ceiling of PF70, typically showing a virtually flawless strike with only the faintest, often imperceptible, imperfection under magnification — still an excellent grade for a proof issue of this age.

Why This Coin Stands Out
One-year-only Sovereign designs are a recurring collector favourite, and the 2005 Noad reinterpretation stands apart from the more familiar shield-based one-off designs of 1989 and 2002 by staying true to the Saint George theme while still offering something genuinely different. At the largest denomination in the range and in a near-perfect NGC grade, this is a strong piece for anyone building a set of the Sovereign's occasional design departures.
