The 2005 Gold Proof Five Pound Sovereign is one of the most significant modern issues in the Sovereign series. For this special year, the Royal Mint commissioned artist Timothy Noad to reinterpret the classic sovereign reverse. His bold design features a heraldic-style shield of the Royal Arms, replacing Benedetto Pistrucci’s timeless St George and the Dragon for the first time since 1989.

This coin is struck in 22 carat gold, weighs 39.94g, and has a diameter of 36.02mm. Graded by NGC as PF69 Ultra Cameo, it offers near-perfect quality with strong contrast between the frosted devices and mirrored fields.

With its limited mintage and distinctive departure from tradition, the 2005 Five Pound Sovereign has become a key modern proof issue. Collectors value it as both a one-off design and an important milestone in the long-running Sovereign series.
