This 2001 Sovereign carries Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, in use on UK coinage between 1998 and 2015. Rank-Broadley deliberately aimed for a more realistic, mature depiction of the Queen than her earlier portraits, wanting to "maximise its impact on smaller coins" by making the effigy as large as the coin's surface would allow. She is shown facing right, wearing Queen Mary's Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, with the artist's initials "IRB" below the truncation.

The reverse carries Benedetto Pistrucci's enduring Saint George and the Dragon, first used on the modern Sovereign in 1817 and still regarded as one of the most recognisable coin designs in the world. The sculptor's "B.P." initials appear to the right of the exergue, with the date below.

Graded NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo — the maximum attainable grade, reflecting a flawless strike with no imperfections under magnification and strong cameo contrast between the frosted devices and mirrored fields. Only 72 examples of this coin have ever been certified at this top grade.
