Queen Elizabeth II by Mary Gillick. This elegant depiction of a young Queen was used on sovereigns from 1957 through 1968, before being replaced by the Arnold Machin portrait in 1974.

The reverse carries Benedetto Pistrucci’s classic St George and the Dragon, one of the most enduring designs in numismatic history.

Graded by NGC as MS64, this example displays strong lustre, sharp detail and minimal handling marks. It represents one of the better-preserved examples from the final decade of Gillick-portrait sovereigns.

While 1968 marks the final year of the Gillick design (struck in Pretoria), the 1966 issue is particularly desirable as one of the last British-minted sovereigns before production temporarily ceased in the UK.
