The 2026 Portraits of a Queen – The First Effigy £5 Gold Proof Coin marks the beginning of a brand-new Royal Mint series celebrating the five definitive coinage portraits of Queen Elizabeth II. This inaugural release pays tribute to the first effigy by Mary Gillick, which appeared on UK coinage from 1953 to 1967 following Her Majesty’s coronation.
The Gillick design has been remastered by the Royal Mint’s Chief Engraver, Gordon Summers, and enhanced with a radiant sunburst background to highlight the youthful image of the Queen in her early reign.
On the obverse, the coin features the official portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings, bringing together two generations of British monarchy on a single coin.
Struck in 22-carat gold to flawless proof standard, this coin is presented in its official Royal Mint case with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity. As the first issue of the Portraits of a Queen series, it is a landmark release for modern British numismatics and an essential addition for collectors.
