2025 Royal Arms Gold Proof Quintuple Sovereign – Five Sovereign – NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo

Also known as the Five Sovereign or Five-Sovereign Piece, the Quintuple Sovereign is the largest coin in The Royal Mint's flagship Sovereign range — and the 2025 edition is one of the most historically significant in years. Struck to mark 200 years since the original 1825 Sovereign, this coin carries a faithfully remastered version of Jean Baptiste Merlen's ornate Royal Arms shield design, surrounded by its original Latin legend, "ARMA GEORGII IV BRITANNIARUM REGIS" — preserved from the historic 1825 die as part of the remastering.

This coin is also notable as the final Sovereign to be struck in The Royal Mint's distinctive rose gold alloy, with the range returning to traditional yellow gold from 2026 onward. The obverse carries Martin Jennings' official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III — marking the first time Merlen's historic Royal Arms design has appeared alongside a King's portrait on The Sovereign.

Graded NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo — the maximum attainable grade, with a flawless strike and no imperfections under magnification. Against a mintage of only 500 (available exclusively within The Royal Mint's five-coin Sovereign proof set), just 56 examples have been certified at this top grade, making this an exceptionally difficult coin to source.

Why This Coin Stands Out

A mintage of 500 is already remarkable for a Quintuple Sovereign, and with only 56 examples certified PF70 Ultra Cameo, this coin sits at the very top of what NGC has ever awarded for the issue. Add in the historic 200th-anniversary Royal Arms design, the rose gold alloy retired after this year, and a King Charles III obverse paired with a design dating back to George IV, and this becomes a coin with layered significance rarely found in a single release. A genuine centrepiece for any serious Sovereign collection.

As UK legal tender gold, this coin is exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents and free from VAT under current investment gold rules. Browse our full range of graded gold Sovereigns to explore more from the Royal Arms series and beyond.
