A Bicentenary Milestone: The 2025 Royal Arms Gold Proof Sovereign
The 2025 Gold Proof Sovereign is a historic tribute to one of the most elegant designs in numismatic history. It commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Royal Arms reverse, which first appeared on the Sovereign in 1825. This 2025 edition faithfully remasters the original work of Jean Baptiste Merlen, making it an essential acquisition for collectors of heraldic excellence.
Flawless NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo Grade
This coin has been awarded the perfect PF70 Ultra Cameo grade by NGC. A "70" grade represents a flawless strike with no post-production imperfections. The "Ultra Cameo" designation identifies the sharp contrast between the deeply frosted Jean Baptiste Merlen design and the mirror-like, liquid fields—the highest standard achievable for a proof coin.
The Final Rose Gold Sovereign
- Remastered 1825 Design: Features the Royal Arms with the Hanoverian Arms at the centre, a design that only appeared on Sovereigns between 1825 and 1837.
- End of an Era: The Royal Mint has confirmed that 2025 is the final year that The Sovereign will be struck in its contemporary rose gold hue. From 2026, the series returns to its traditional 500-year-old yellow gold roots.
- King Charles III Obverse: For the first time, Merlen's 1825 design is paired with the official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III by Martin Jennings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why is the 2025 Sovereign struck in rose gold?
A: Modern Sovereigns have used a specific rose gold alloy for several decades. However, 2025 marks the final year for this finish. Collectors are particularly keen on this issue as it represents the "end of a chapter" before the transition to yellow gold in 2026.
Q: Is this coin Capital Gains Tax (CGT) exempt?
A: Yes. As official UK legal tender, the 2025 Gold Sovereign is 100% exempt from CGT for UK residents, regardless of the profit made upon resale.
Q: What is the significance of the Hanoverian Arms in the design?
A: The central shield features the Arms of the House of Hanover. This historically only appeared on Sovereigns until 1837, as Queen Victoria was unable to inherit the throne of Hanover. Its inclusion here marks a faithful 200-year anniversary celebration of the 1825 original.
