2022 The Royal Tudor Beasts Lion of England Quarter Ounce Gold Proof Coin – NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo

The Lion of England is the second coin in The Royal Mint's Royal Tudor Beasts collection. It is one of the ten stone beasts that guard the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court Palace and represent the ancestry of Henry VIII and his third wife Jane Seymour. The lion is one of the oldest and most iconic beasts in heraldry and Henry VIII chose it to represent pride and courage and strength.

The reverse was designed by David Lawrence and shows the Lion of England in an intimidating pose with a flowing mane and sharp claws. It is based on the original statue on the Moat Bridge and holds a shield bearing the combined arms of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour. The obverse carries Jody Clark's fifth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

Graded NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo which is the maximum attainable grade. Only 26 examples have been certified at this level against a limited edition of 1,000. The coin shows a flawless strike with no imperfections under magnification and deep cameo contrast between the frosted devices and mirrored fields.

Why This Coin Stands Out

Only 26 coins from an edition of 1,000 have reached PF70 Ultra Cameo. That is around 2% of the edition. Combined with a place at the very start of the Royal Tudor Beasts collection and a design based on one of the most recognisable heraldic beasts in British history it is a strong piece for series collectors and for anyone working towards the 2027 Completer coin.

As UK legal tender gold this coin is exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents and free from VAT under current investment gold rules. Browse our full range of graded gold Sovereigns to explore more rare and top-graded commemorative gold.

Can I verify the coin's grade?

Yes. Every NGC-certified coin has a unique certification number visible on the slab label. You can verify the grade, coin details and population data at NGCcoin.uk using the cert number shown.

What is the population or top pop figure?

The NGC census records how many examples of each coin have been graded at each level. A Top Pop coin means no other example has achieved a higher grade — making it the finest certified specimen in existence for that issue.

Do you offer part exchange?

Yes. We accept all proof coins and graded coins in part exchange, including NGC and PCGS certified coins, boxed gold and silver proofs, and proof sets.

Tell us what you'd like to trade and which coin you have your eye on, and we'll give you a bespoke cost-to-change valuation.
