2022 Memorial Gold Proof Piedfort Sovereign – First King Charles III Portrait
This 2022 Memorial Piedfort Sovereign marks a genuine turning point in the Sovereign series: it carries the first-ever coinage portrait of King Charles III, created by British sculptor Martin Jennings, shown in left-facing profile without a crown. Issued in the months following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, this coin bridges two reigns — closing out Her Late Majesty's era on the reverse while introducing the new King on the obverse.
The reverse, designed by Jody Clark, features an intricately detailed Royal Arms — a shield of the United Kingdom's coat of arms flanked by the Lion of England and the Unicorn of Scotland, beneath a crowned helmet and surrounded by national flower emblems. As a Piedfort — meaning "heavy measure" — this coin is struck to double the thickness and double the gold weight of a standard Sovereign, giving it real substance and presence.
This boxed edition is supplied in its original Royal Mint presentation case with a numbered certificate of authenticity — distinct from our individually NGC-graded PF70 example, for collectors who prefer the coin in its original Royal Mint packaging.

Why This Coin Stands Out
Piedfort Sovereigns are already an uncommon format — the Royal Mint has only issued them in a handful of years since 2017. Combine that with a mintage of just 2,032 and the historic significance of carrying the very first King Charles III coinage portrait, and this becomes a coin with a strong story on top of genuine scarcity. It's a natural centrepiece for anyone collecting the transition period between the two reigns, or building out a Piedfort Sovereign run.
As UK legal tender gold, this coin is exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents and free from VAT under current investment gold rules.
