Only 55 examples have achieved MS70 Matte grade out of 1,500 struck.
On 31st January 2020 at 11:00 PM, the United Kingdom formally withdrew from the European Union. To commemorate this historic constitutional milestone, The Royal Mint struck a limited edition of 1,500 “Strike on the Day” Sovereigns — each one struck exclusively on the date of withdrawal, immortalising Brexit Day in 22-carat gold.
This is one of the most historically significant British gold coins of the 21st century. And at NGC MS70 Matte — the pinnacle of the grading scale — it is also one of the rarest.
The Three Features That Define This Coin's Rarity
1. The Crowned Portcullis Privy Mark
Positioned to the left of the date on the reverse, the portcullis is the historic symbol of the Palace of Westminster — signifying the UK's legislative independence and the return of sovereign powers to Parliament. It appears on no other sovereign.
2. The Plain Edge
Standard sovereigns carry a milled (reeded) edge. This issue has a completely plain edge — a detail reserved for the most prestigious Royal Mint strikes — giving it the feel of a bespoke commemorative medal.
3. MS70 Matte — Top Population, Only 55 in Grade
The matte finish is notoriously unforgiving to grade. Unlike proof coins whose polished fields can mask minor contact, matte surfaces reveal every mark under a loupe. Of 1,500 struck, only 55 examples have achieved the flawless MS70 Matte grade from NGC. This coin is one of them — verified on the NGC census registry.
Investment & Tax Status
British gold sovereigns are CGT exempt as legal tender and carry no VAT — meaning any appreciation in the value of this coin is entirely tax-free for UK residents.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many 2020 Brexit sovereigns were struck?
The Royal Mint struck 1,500 “Strike on the Day” sovereigns on 31st January 2020. This is the total mintage — no further coins were struck after withdrawal day.
What does MS70 Matte mean?
MS70 is the highest Mint State grade from NGC — a flawless specimen with no contact marks or imperfections. “Matte” indicates a non-reflective finish rather than a proof mirror surface. The matte finish is harder to grade at 70 than proof, which is why only 55 examples have achieved it.
What is the privy mark on this coin?
A crowned portcullis — the heraldic symbol of the Houses of Parliament — appears to the left of the date. It is unique to this issue and references Parliament's reclamation of legislative sovereignty following withdrawal.
Is this coin CGT exempt?
Yes. British gold sovereigns are legal tender and therefore CGT exempt for UK residents. No VAT applies.
