2017 Gold Proof Quarter Sovereign – 200th Anniversary – NGC PF69 Ultra Cameo
Struck to mark 200 years since the modern Sovereign was first issued in 1817, this Quarter Sovereign revives a detail absent from the design for nearly two centuries: Benedetto Pistrucci's original Saint George and the Dragon, enclosed within a stylised garter bearing the motto of the Order of the Garter, "HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE" ("shame on him who thinks evil of it"). True to the 1817 original, Saint George is shown holding a broken lance rather than the short sword seen on later Sovereigns — a historically faithful detail only used in this anniversary year.
The obverse carries Jody Clark's fifth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, with the date unusually shown on the obverse rather than the reverse, following the layout of the original 1817 design.
Graded NGC PF69 Ultra Cameo, this coin offers the same historic garter design and proof finish as our top-graded PF70 example, at a more accessible price point — an excellent way to add this design to your collection without paying a premium for the single highest possible grade.

Why This Coin Stands Out
The garter reverse is one of the more historically significant one-year-only Sovereign designs, restoring a detail lost since the earliest 19th-century strikes. A PF69 grade delivers the same design story and proof craftsmanship as a top-graded example, making it a smart choice for collectors who want the coin without stretching for the very top of the grading scale.
As UK legal tender gold, this coin is exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents and free from VAT under current investment gold rules. Browse our full range of graded gold Sovereigns to compare grades and find the right piece for your collection.
