The 2017 Gold Proof Half Sovereign is a highly prized modern issue, struck to mark the absolute pinnacle of British numismatic history: the 200th Anniversary of the modern Sovereign (1817–2017). To celebrate this bicentenary, the Royal Mint revived a historic design element exclusively for the 2017 proof collection.
The Exclusive Garter Border Design
Paying homage to Benedetto Pistrucci’s original 1817 masterpiece, this 2017 Half Sovereign features the classic "St George and the Dragon" framed within a Garter Border. Inscribed with the Order of the Garter's French motto, 'HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE' (Shame on him who thinks evil of it), this design element has not been used on a standard proof sovereign since the early 19th century.
Perfect PF70 Ultra Cameo Grade
This specimen has been certified by NGC as PF70 Ultra Cameo. This is the highest possible grade awarded to a proof coin, guaranteeing a perfect strike with no visible imperfections even under 5x magnification. The "Ultra Cameo" designation ensures a crisp, heavily frosted relief that contrasts beautifully with highly reflective, liquid-mirror fields.
The Jody Clark Portrait
The obverse displays the fifth definitive coinage portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark. This marked the first major centenary/bicentenary milestone for the Sovereign to feature this specific portrait, adding a layer of contemporary relevance to a deeply traditional design.

We offer free insured delivery across the UK on all orders. Every coin is carefully inspected, securely packaged, and sent using Royal Mail Special Delivery - a fully tracked, next-day service that requires a signature on receipt.
All parcels are shipped discreetly and fully insured for peace of mind.
We currently do not ship internationally. Orders can only be delivered to the UK address provided at checkout, and we’re unable to send to PO Box addresses.

Returns Policy
For non-bullion items (such as proof coins, graded coins or accessories), we’re happy to accept returns within 14 days of receipt if you feel your coin is not as described and provided the item is returned in its original condition, please contact us and we’ll be glad to help.
If an item is returned for reasons other than being not as described, return postage will be the responsibility of the buyer.
