Struck to mark the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the throne, this 2012 Sovereign carries a one-year-only reverse design by British sculptor Paul Day, winner of a competition held among five artists to reinterpret Benedetto Pistrucci's classic Saint George and the Dragon for the Diamond Jubilee year. Day's version takes a more dramatic, Arthurian approach — a medieval knight in Gothic armour locked in combat with a larger, more menacing dragon, filling the entire reverse field with the date squeezed beneath the dragon's belly. Day described his intent as opting for "a Romantic version of the St George and the dragon theme... rather than a classical hero," giving the dragon "a more threatening attitude and size, so that it represents a real menace." The design was personally approved by Queen Elizabeth II herself.
The obverse carries Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, used on UK coinage between 1998 and 2015.

Returns Policy

If an item is returned for reasons other than being not as described, return postage will be the responsibility of the buyer.
