The 1988 Gold Proof Sovereign is part of The Royal Mint’s revival era of modern proof sovereigns, struck in 22-carat gold with Benedetto Pistrucci’s timeless St George and the Dragon reverse. The obverse carries the second definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin, which remained in use on proof sovereigns until the mid-1990s.

This coin has been certified by NGC as PF70 Ultra Cameo, the highest grade available. It confirms a flawless strike with immaculate surfaces and superb cameo contrast between the frosted design and mirror-like proof fields. Very few 1980s proof sovereigns survive in this perfect grade, making them far rarer than their modern counterparts.

The 1988 proof issue is a popular choice among collectors looking to build a complete run of proof sovereigns, and in PF70 UC it stands out as a premium example of exceptional quality and scarcity.
