The 1989 Gold Proof 3-Coin Sovereign Set is one of the most historically important and visually celebrated releases in the entire Sovereign series. Issued by The Royal Mint to mark the 500th Anniversary of the Sovereign, it introduced an entirely new design created by the sculptor Bernard Sindall, replacing the traditional St George and the Dragon motif for the first time in over a century.
Sindall designed both sides of the coin. The obverse presents a magnificent and symbolic depiction of Queen Elizabeth II enthroned, crowned and robed, holding the orb and sceptre - an image inspired by the Great Seals of earlier monarchs. The reverse revives the essence of the original Tudor Sovereign of 1489, displaying a crowned shield of the Royal Arms upon a double Tudor rose, surrounded by the legend ANNIVERSARY OF THE GOLD SOVEREIGN 1489–1989.
Struck in 22 carat gold to the highest proof standard, this 3-coin set includes the Double Sovereign, Full Sovereign and Half Sovereign. Each coin displays immaculate detail, deep mirrored fields, and superb frosting - making this set one of the most distinctive and coveted modern proof issues ever produced by The Royal Mint.
The 1989 proof series stands as a defining moment in the Sovereign’s 500-year history, symbolising continuity, craftsmanship, and royal tradition.

Buying New or Preowned Gold and Silver
At Sovara Coins, we offer both new and preowned gold and silver products to suit various investment strategies. Purchasing preowned bullion can be a cost-effective option, as it often comes with a lower premium over the spot price, allowing you to maximize your investment.
While preowned items may show minor signs of wear, such as scratches, milk spots or tarnishing, they are sold strictly as bullion, with their precious metal content fully guaranteed. Whether you choose new or preowned, you can be confident in the quality and authenticity of our products.
