A New Era of Tradition: The 2024 Gold Proof Sovereign
The 2024 Proof Sovereign represents a historic "first" for collectors. While the 2023 Sovereigns featured a special crowned portrait for the Coronation, this 2024 release is the first Proof Sovereign to feature the definitive, uncrowned effigy of King Charles III alongside the classic St George and the Dragon design. This makes it the essential "anchor" coin for any collection of the new reign.
Flawless NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo Grade
This specimen has been awarded the perfect grade of PF70 Ultra Cameo by NGC. A "70" grade is the highest possible certification, denoting a coin with no post-production imperfections even under 5x professional magnification. The "Ultra Cameo" designation ensures a sharp, frosty contrast between the raised relief and the deep, mirror-polished fields—a hallmark of The Royal Mint's finest proof craftsmanship.
Design & Numismatic Significance
- The Obverse: Features the first definitive coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III, designed by renowned sculptor Martin Jennings. In keeping with tradition, the King faces left—the opposite direction to his predecessor, Queen Elizabeth II.
- The Reverse: Marks the return of Benedetto Pistrucci’s iconic 1817 "St George and the Dragon" motif to the Proof series, following its absence during the 2023 Coronation year.
- Investment Quality: Struck in 22-carat gold to a strict Proof standard, this coin combines centuries of tradition with the precision of modern minting technology.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is the 2024 Sovereign PF70 different from the 2023 version?
A: Yes. The 2023 Proof Sovereign was a one-year commemorative for the Coronation, featuring a crowned portrait and a different reverse. The 2024 edition is the first "standard" Proof Sovereign of King Charles III's reign, featuring his definitive uncrowned portrait and the return of St George.
Q: Is this coin Capital Gains Tax (CGT) exempt?
A: Yes. As official UK legal tender, all British gold sovereigns are 100% exempt from CGT for UK residents, making them an excellent choice for tax-efficient gold investment.
Q: How many 2024 Gold Proof Sovereigns were minted?
A: The Royal Mint set a maximum coin mintage of 9,260 for the individual 2024 Proof Sovereign, making perfect PF70 graded examples highly sought after as they represent the "top of the population."
