The Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III 2023 Celebration Sovereign – Struck on 6 May 2023

Struck on 6 May 2023 — the exact day of King Charles III's coronation at Westminster Abbey — this was the very first opportunity for collectors to own a 2023-dated Sovereign, issued as part of The Royal Mint's long-running Strike on the Day series. It carries Martin Jennings' first coinage portrait of King Charles III, shown uncrowned and facing left, paired with Benedetto Pistrucci's classic Saint George and the Dragon on the reverse.

This is the boxed, Brilliant Uncirculated edition, supplied in its original Royal Mint presentation case with a certificate of authenticity — distinct from our individually NGC-graded example of the same coin, for collectors who prefer it in its original Royal Mint packaging rather than a certified holder.

Why This Coin Stands Out

A coronation is a genuinely once-in-a-generation event, and this coin captures it in the most direct way possible — struck on the actual day, carrying the very first Sovereign portrait of the new King. As the opening entry in the 2023-dated Sovereign story, it holds a natural place at the start of any King Charles III collection, boxed exactly as The Royal Mint issued it.

As UK legal tender gold, this coin is exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents and free from VAT under current investment gold rules. Browse our full range of graded gold Sovereigns to explore more Strike on the Day and Coronation issues.

Can I verify the coin's grade?

Yes. Every NGC-certified coin has a unique certification number visible on the slab label. You can verify the grade, coin details and population data at NGCcoin.uk using the cert number shown.

What is the population or top pop figure?

The NGC census records how many examples of each coin have been graded at each level. A Top Pop coin means no other example has achieved a higher grade — making it the finest certified specimen in existence for that issue.

Do you offer part exchange?

Yes. We accept all proof coins and graded coins in part exchange, including NGC and PCGS certified coins, boxed gold and silver proofs, and proof sets.

Tell us what you'd like to trade and which coin you have your eye on, and we'll give you a bespoke cost-to-change valuation.
