2018 Sapphire Coronation Strike on the Day Celebration Sovereign
On 2 June 1953, Queen Elizabeth II was crowned at Westminster Abbey. Sixty-five years later, to the day, The Royal Mint struck just 650 special editions of The Sovereign to mark the Sapphire Anniversary of that Coronation — each one produced on 2 June 2018 itself. Genuine "struck on the day" Sovereigns are among the most sought-after modern issues, and this is one of the scarcest: trade estimates suggest as few as approximately 320 of the maximum 650 were actually struck and issued, making surviving examples considerably harder to find than the official mintage cap alone would suggest.
The obverse carries Jody Clark's fifth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, while the reverse features Benedetto Pistrucci's classic Saint George and the Dragon. Exclusive to this edition, the coin carries a plain edge rather than the usual milled edge, along with a special mint mark featuring the number "65" to mark the anniversary. Each coin is accompanied by a hand-signed Certificate of Authenticity from The Royal Mint.
This coin is supplied boxed in its original Royal Mint presentation case, in Brilliant Uncirculated / FDC condition as issued.

Why This Coin Stands Out
Strike on the Day Sovereigns already carry a premium for the exact-date connection to a historic royal event, but this issue's likely true mintage — well below its published cap — puts it among the scarcest examples in the entire SOTD category. Combined with its unique plain edge and hand-signed certificate, it's a genuinely difficult coin to replace once sold.
As UK legal tender gold, this coin is exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents and free from VAT under current investment gold rules. Browse our full range of graded gold Sovereigns to explore more Coronation and Jubilee anniversary issues.
