The 1980 Sovereign Gold Proof PF70 Ultra Cameo was one of the earliest modern proof sovereigns issued by The Royal Mint, as the proof series was revived in the late 1970s. Struck in 22-carat gold with a polished proof finish, the coin features Benedetto Pistrucci’s timeless St George and the Dragon reverse design.

The obverse carries the second definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin, used on sovereigns from 1974 through 1984.

This example has been certified by NGC as PF70 Ultra Cameo, the ultimate grade, confirming flawless surfaces and perfect cameo contrast. Few 1980 issues survive in this grade, making it a highly desirable coin for collectors focused on building complete proof runs or securing early modern proofs in the best condition possible.

As one of the first proof sovereigns of the modern era, the 1980 issue holds special significance, and in PF70 UC it represents both rarity and quality at the highest level.
